Name: Rupert Venables
Series/Fandom: Deep Secret by Diana Wynne Jones
Age: 28 (Feb 25)
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Straight
Power: Rupert is a Magid, and is in fact Senior Magid for Earth. Being a Magid allows Rupert to do an assortment of small workings, such as building a spell to switch CDs in a player and tracking a persons magical essence, to some larger more difficult workings, such as drawing fate lines together. His specialities lie in two main areas. The first is a very powerful stasis ability, in which he can use to hold a person down or even hold an elevator in place with no stain on him. The second is the ability to work with computers magically, such as working magic into programs to make them run better or scanning computers for magical viruses. Rupert also possess a moderate precog ability, though it tends to be more feelings and impressions than visions.
Course desired: Computer Applications
Motivation: Rupert is professionally a computer software designer, games mostly, and knows computers inside and out (he even once modified an Earth computer to be compatible with another world's storage media, using just magic).
Personality:
While not necessarily a difficult person to get along with, his older brother, Will, put it best when he said that Rupert "quite often improves on acquaintance." Rupert tends to come off as very professional and a bit stuffy. Very stuffy. But after spending a bit of time with him, especially in an informal environment, he'll loosen up and be quite agreeable to be around.
Rupert gets a lot of satisfaction out of his work, both as a software designer and a Magid, especially as a Magid. Because he's a Magid, Rupert tends to be considerably tolerant toward many things, including people, especially people (though even Rupert has a point where he just refuses to put up with things). And if it's for Magid business, Rupert will put up with a great deal.
Even if he wasn't a Magid, Rupert would still be a very helpful and thoughtful person. He'll lend people what assistance he can, asked or unasked, even if it comes as something of an inconvenience or bother to him. He'll keep his discontent to himself and render the needed help. In the end, he'll usually feel good about it anyway.
One of Rupert's more noticeable traits is his temper. He tends to expect things to go his way and really doesn't like wasting time. While it's not really drop-of-the-hat, it can be quite explosive and Rupert can utilise a lot of energy when he's well and truly angry. He also tends to be a little vengeful as he once deliberately made sure a particular person was not only uninvolved in something but kept away entirely. The sure-fire way to know if Rupert is in the least bit irritated is if he adjusts his glasses.
Though he's doing a lot better about it, Rupert has a tendency to be a little overconfident where magic is concerned. So when things go wrong magically, it throws him for a bit of a loop. Being a Magid lends Rupert a great deal of varied experiences and knowledge that the majority of the population isn't privy to, so when he's one-up'd, it doesn't sit well with him.
Rupert is improving at reading people. He used to hold himself very detached from other people, but he's seen how that can land him in trouble. He's becoming better at empathizing with others and noticing the little nuances people have, especially if he shares them.
History:
The youngest of three brothers, Rupert grew up in Cambridge, England. He had a relatively normal childhood, spent winding up his older brothers, them winding him up in turn, and just having a mostly happy family life. The Venables family often went on outings and vacations together, and all the brothers had good relationships with each other and their parents.
One of Rupert's more unique talents growing up was his way of skiving off and vanishing whenever someone wanted him to do something. By meekly agreeing to whatever the request was, Rupert shifted the attention off of him enough to where he could slip away unnoticed. His brothers nicknamed him 'Houdini' for this, and Rupert undeniably caused his mother a degree of grief with his unwillingness to comply. He eventually grew out of this tactic.
After completing his A-levels Rupert went to university to study computer science. Soon after graduating, he was hired by a computer games company and began programming for them. It was also around this time that Rupert started feeling... off. He was restless, he was irritable, he was... missing something. Something very important and integral to who and what he was. But he had no idea what it was.
Rupert was 21 when he and his brothers made the acquaintance of Stan Churning, an ex-jockey. At first none of them thought anything of it. Will was the first to notice something odd about Stan. Rupert didn't figure it out until several months later. By then Will had been inducted as a Magid. Simon was the next, and finally Rupert was trained to be a Magid and inducted when he was 23.
Things were relatively calm the first few years Rupert was a Magid. It didn't seem that way at the time, but in hindsight they really were calm years. By the time Rupert was 26 he was still the most junior Magid of Earth. But then Stan died. The thing about Magids is, there's always a constant number of them. When one dies another must be trained to take their vacancy. That was Rupert's next task.
The next six months proved to be more difficult for Rupert than the previous three years combined. The Koryfonic Empire, one of his responsibilities, was crumbling and his search for Stan's replacement was equally frustrating. Between sifting through candidates who seemed more wrong than right he tried to find the heirs of an emperor who was so suspicious he'd prohibited his offspring from even knowing who they were under penalty of death (and kept the records of their birth, identity, and location in a booby-trapped computer).
It's never easy to be dropped in the middle of an Intention, especially if it's one that could tip the balance of not only several worlds but the entire multiverse. In the end, Rupert managed to pull through, finding not only his new Magid but a new ruler for the Empire. He was far from satisfied but the Upper Room was considerably impressed with how he did. When his new Magid was inducted about a year after Stan's death, the Upper Room promoted Rupert to Senior Magid of Earth.
They also assured him that he would receive some less stressful assignments for a while. A year later, Rupert has received a new assignment. Post as a teacher at Meillure Academy and find potential Magids amongst the students there and at the attached university, just to have another list ready the next time a Magid dies.
Journal-Entry RP Sample:
As your previous Computer Applications teacher had to take a leave of absence, I'll be taking his place for the remainder of the semester and possibly next semester as well. I'll just be picking up with where he left off with the Office programs.
Assignment #2 for Excel will be due Friday at the beginning of class.

Just how am I supposed to do this? Last time I had a list to work from. This time I'm making the list. How did Stan make that list? There I go again, trying to rely on someone else when I'm supposed to be figuring this out myself. Still, sometimes I miss that disembodied voice.
Third-Person RP Sample:
Rupert looked down at the door of his car. His brand new car. Well, it was about two years old now, but it'd been brand new when he'd gotten it. After the fiasco with finding Stan's replacement and the crumbling of the Koryfonic Empire, Rupert had felt he richly deserved to have a new car. Especially as his previous car had been a casualty of aforementioned events.
He'd even gone through the trouble of bringing it over from England, as he had a feeling he would be here in Boston for a while. If the length of time it'd taken to find Stan's replacement with a list was any indication it would take even longer to put such a list together. So he had made himself good and comfortable.
And now there was a scratch across his driver's side door. Not just any scratch. Someone had keyed his car. Rupert first berated the little twit that had keyed his car, and then he berated himself for not putting appropriate protections on his car in a school full of teenagers. It hadn't been that long since he'd been their age. They were prone to such idiotic acts like this.
Letting out a huff of breath, Rupert adjusted his glasses and then lightly slid his fingers over the scored paint, the scratch vanishing a moment later. Much better.
